Carl Fine is Andy Fine’s half-brother.
Detectives Armstrong and Murphy re-interviewed him at the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff’s Department.
Participants:
- Detective T. Armstrong
- Detective S. Murphy
- Carl Fine
Detective Murphy: Thanks for talking to us again, Carl.
Carl Fine: Sure thing. Y’all made any headway on this thing?
Detective Armstrong: We’re trying.
Detective Murphy: I know this seems repetitive, but for the record, could you please state your name and address?
Carl Fine: My name is Carl Fine. I live at 108 Warren Street.
Detective Murphy: We’d like to talk to you a little bit about some information that we’ve discovered in the investigation.
Carl Fine: Okay. Shoot.
Detective Murphy: We found Andy’s watch.
Carl Fine: Oh yeah? Where did it turn up?
Detective Armstrong: Eddie Dooley had it.
Carl Fine: I’ll be damned. Although I can’t say that surprises me. Little pickpocket. He’d take anything.
Detective Murphy: Do you think Eddie could’ve had anything to do with Andy’s murder?
Carl Fine: No. He’s a liar and a thief, but he doesn’t have the guts to put his head up enough to kill someone. He likes to stay under everyone’s radar.
Detective Armstrong: You seem pretty sure of that.
Carl Fine: I suppose I am.
Detective Murphy: You’re pretty calm about that too. Guy steals your brother’s watch… you seem pretty laid back.
Carl Fine: I guess I am laid back about it. Maybe Eddie Dooley would surprise me and turn out to be a cold-blooded killer, but I doubt it. He’s a bug. An insect. He’s not even worth squashing. So no, I’m not going to get upset about him stealing my brother’s watch when the murderer is still out there.
Detective Armstrong: Okay, let’s talk about something else.
Detective Murphy: Have you seen your sister-in-law since your brother’s death?
Carl Fine: Cindy? Of course. There was the funeral and all the other arrangements that had to be made.
Detective Armstrong: Arrangements? Is that all?
Carl Fine: What do you mean?
Detective Murphy: Carl, we don’t want to be disrespectful here, but people have reported seeing you at Cindy’s apartment several times since your brother’s death. Some have said it was pretty late at night when you visited.
Carl Fine: So?
Detective Armstrong: You and Cindy were an item back in the day, right? I mean, she dumped you and took up with your brother.
Carl Fine: Oh, just stop it! That’s ridiculous. Don’t even go there.
Detective Armstrong: I’ve seen people kill for less than that.
Carl Fine: That’s bullshit! I had nothing to do with my brother’s murder. I should… I should… I don’t know. Sue you for even saying such a thing!
Detective Murphy: What were you doing over at Cindy’s, Carl?
Carl Fine: I went by there to talk about the funeral and burial arrangements. I’ve been there a couple of times to talk about settling his estate such as it is. And then I’ve been by there a couple of times just to check on her. Is that okay? Can I make sure that my sister-in-law is doing all right after her husband’s been murdered?
Detective Murphy: Look, we had to ask the question—
Carl Fine: No! You look. My brother is dead. Her husband is dead. He might have been an asshole to many people in this town, but he was still our kin! And we shouldn’t have to feel bad about helping each other through this.
Detective Armstrong: Calm down—
Carl Fine: Screw that! Don’t tell me to calm down. Have you ever had a family member murdered? Then don’t talk to me about this stuff. Is there an official reason I have to be here?
Detective Murphy: We haven’t charged you with anything. We just want your help—
Carl Fine: Then you can forget it. This discussion is over. I’m not sitting here listening to this crap.
